Houston, Texas - University of Missouri senior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (Jasper, Texas) has been named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2009 Lombardi Award, as announced today by the Rotary Club of Houston.
Weatherspoon has been one of the top defenders in the country in 2009, as he's led the charge for an improved Mizzou defense that has helped the Tigers to a 4-1 record thus far. He's leading Mizzou in tackles, with 43 through five games, and also has four tackles for loss and 1.5 quarterback sacks. A third-team Associated Press All-American in 2008 who led the Big 12 Conference in tackles a year ago (155), Weatherspoon is currently 9th on the Mizzou career tackles chart, with 345 stops, and is 89 away from the school record of 434 set by James Kinney from 2001-04.
On Nov. 11th, four finalists for this year's Lombardi Award will be named. All of the finalists will travel to Houston for the ceremony to announce the winner on Dec. 9th. The voters for the Rotary Lombardi Award consist of all head coaches of NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams, all of the former winners and finalists of the Rotary Lombardi Award, and selected members of the media.
The Rotary Club of Houston founded the Rotary Lombardi Award in 1970, following the passing of legendary football coach Vince Lombardi from cancer. The 40th Rotary Lombardi Award dinner will be held on December 9, 2009, at the Hilton Americas Hotel. Net proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.
