WALNUT RIDGE, AR (KAIT) - The Children's Shelter in Lawrence County is empty tonight, while investigators follow up on an anonymous tip. It closed earlier this month after someone phoned in a tip to a state hotline.
State and local police would not comment about the case on camera. Shelter Director Amber Hampton released the following statement:
"Although this has been disturbing for staff, board members, volunteers and the children who were removed from the shelter, we can take comfort in the fact that this system is in place to protect children. We truly appreciate the rapid response of the Division of Children and Family Services and the investigators who were involved in this inquiry, after all, our foremost purpose is the security and well being of the children.
The Children's Shelter has approval from Child Welfare Licensing to begin accepting children at this time. However, the board is waiting until all construction is completed on the renovations to the clothing closet and other minor repairs completed before the shelter will begin taking children.
