Red Wolves Volleyball Tops Louisana-Lafayette

JONESBORO, Ark. (10/16/09) - Arkansas State won its fifth Sun Belt Conference match of the season Friday night over Louisiana-Lafayette, topping the Ragin' Cajuns 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19) at the ASU Convocation Center.

"We came out on fire, and we were out there killing lots of balls which is a giant advantage for our team," said ASU head coach Justin Ingram.  "To be aggressive is huge for us, but as the match went along we faded.  In order to be great and beat more teams, we have to sustain that good level of play throughout the course of a match, and that is something we have been battling."

Freshman Brittany Hoag led the Red Wolves with 17 kills on the night and was joined in double-digit kills by sophomore Cayla Fielder with 13 and sophomore Charlyn Ursell with 11.  Hoag also reached double-digit digs on the night, posting 10 digs in the match.

"Hoag and Char were very solid at their positions," added Ingram.  "Cayla also got some key kills for us throughout the course of the match.  They were all fairly steady, and we need that kill production out of all of them in order to really feel good about how it ends."

Senior libero Heather Bowman led the defensive effort with 26 digs, while Fielder and freshman Kelsie Hodges each notched four blocks.  Fielder recorded three solo blocks in the match.

Junior setter Laura Bennett tallied 48 assists and posted three service aces.

The Red Wolves rolled past the Ragin' Cajuns in set one 25-15.  In the second set, a service ace from Bennett put ASU up 24-18, but ULL hung on to win four straight points.  A kill from Ursell finally put the match away at 25-22.  Louisiana-Lafayette battled back to take set three 25-18, but the Red Wolves came out of a 10-10 tie in the fourth set and never trailed the rest of the way.  ASU took set four 25-19.

Arkansas State will be back in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday, Oct. 17 when they take on New Orleans at 3:00 p.m. at the ASU Convocation Center.
