MEMPHIS, TN - Arkansas State sophomore Chris Pledger collected his best finish of the season at the Memphis Intercollegiate, completing the two-day tournament at the Colonial Country Club on Tuesday tied for 26th place to lead the Red Wolves in their fourth tournament of the season.
The Red Wolves ended the first round tied for seventh place, but fell to 15th place in the final standings despite posting lower scores in both the second and third rounds. ASU opened play with a 309 before coming back to shoot a 305 in the second round, which was suspended Monday due to darkness and resumed Tuesday morning. The Red Wolves turned in a final-round 307 to end the tournament with a combined 921.
South Alabama won the 16-team tournament with an 882, while UALR shot an 887 and Southern Mississippi an 894 to round out the top three finisher's. Iowa State finished fourth with an 899 and was followed by Denver (900), Ohio State (905), Memphis (906), Mississippi State (906), Wisconsin (906), Maryland (908), Louisville (909), Penn State (911), Xavier (912), Louisiana Tech (912), Arkansas State (921) and Louisiana-Lafayette (922).
Pledger shot a combined 226 to finish within a single-digit stroke margin of runner-up Espen Kofstad of Denver. South Alabama's Marc-Ettienne Bussieres shot a combined 207 to claim medalist honors. Pledger carded a 74 for both the second and third rounds, which was the lowest single-round score by an ASU player, and his 226 was his second best three-round score of the season.
The Red Wolves Lloyd du Preez, recently named the Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Month, followed Pledger in the standings after shooting a 233 (76-82-75) to place tied for 57th. Wessel Zwiegers followed in 63rd place (234), while Tyler Thompson finished tied for 64th (235) and Warren Hood tied for 78th (239).
ASU next competes at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate in Hammond, La. Nov. 2-3.
