LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The House today easily approved legislation that would reorganize the state Board of Education.
The bill by Representative Leroy Dangeau would have the House speaker and Senate president each appoint three members to the board. The governor would name people for the remaining three slots.
Under the bill, the director of the Education Department would serve at the pleasure of the board, rather than the governor.
Governor Mike Huckabee opposes the bill.
The measure passed on a largely party-line vote of 65-to-28, with mainly Democrats in the majority. The bill goes to the Senate.
