ASU Soccer to face Western Kentucky today

JONESBORO, Ark. (11/1/09) - The No.6-seeded Arkansas State soccer team has drawn the No. 3-seeded Western Kentucky in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference soccer championships which kick off Wednesday in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Red Wolves have had the best season in program history setting records in points, goals, assists, shots, fewest goals against, attendance and wins this season. ASU stands at 8-9-2 and finished conference competition with a 5-5-1 mark, both of which were the best records in school history.

ASU now faces the Hilltoppers who sit at 14-4-1 and posted a 9-2 record in Sun Belt action.

The Red Wolves return to the SBC tournament for the first time since the 2004 season, the only other season the ASU has won seven or more games in a season. FIU enters the championship as the top seed after capturing the regular-season Sun Belt title.

ASU and FIU both had huge jumps in the standings since last season, with ASU moving from 11th to sixth and FIU moving from sixth to first.

Arkansas State and Western Kentucky have met once earlier this season with WKU coming out on top, 4-0 over ASU.

The Red Wolves and the Hilltoppers will play on today at 6 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla. on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.
