SPRINGFIELD, La. (11/3/09) - The Arkansas State men's golf team shot a final-round 302 Tuesday to finish the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate with a three-round 892 that placed the Red Wolves tied for seventh place among the 13-team field.
The Red Wolves were in second place after shooting a first-round 289, but dropped into a tie for seventh place after posting a second-round 301 yesterday to end the tournament's opening day of competition. The Red Wolves 289 was their lowest single-round score over their last three tournaments.
ASU tied Sam Houston State and finished ahead of Jacksonville State (898), Stephen F. Austin (903), Louisiana-Monroe (906), McNeese State (926) and Nicholls State (936). The Red Wolves ended the tournament just eight strokes behind host-school Southeastern Louisiana, while Louisiana-Lafayette claimed the tournament title with an 870.
Rice took second place with an 871 and was followed by Central Arkansas (872), New Orleans (872), UT Arlington (875), and host-school Southeastern Louisiana (884).
Senior Tyler Thompson finished tied for 21st place with a 221 (70-78-73) to lead the Red Wolves. Thompson collected his second top-25 finish of the season and his 221 was his second lowest three-round score of the season.
Joining Thompson in the top 25 for ASU was junior Lloyd du Preez, who finished tied for 25th with a 222 (77-72-73). Sophomore Chris Pledger and senior Kell Shenep both shot a 227 to finish tied for 40th place, while junior Warren Hood finished tied for 51st place with a 231.
ASU, which wrapped up its fall season with the tournament, will next compete Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Feb. 21-23.
"I thought we had a somewhat productive fall season, definitely with some highs and lows," said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. "I saw a lot of good things at this tournament. Heading into the offseason, we're looking forward to working on some things and getting ready to go in February."
