Arkansas State Upsets Western Kentucky in Sun Belt Soccer

Boca Raton, FL (KAIT) - Arkansas State made a statement in its first Sun Belt Soccer Tournament game since 2004, upsetting Western Kentucky 1-1, winning in a shootout.

ASU winning the shootout 4-2.

It's the first time in its history that the ASU soccer program has won a Sun Belt Conference Tournament game.

The Lady Red Wolves opened the scoring in the 17th minute, Michele Clark beating Libby Stout to the left post. Eight minutes later, Megan Meinke tied it up for the Lady Hilltoppers.

ASU and WKU stayed deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation and two overtime periods, so the Quarterfinal matchup would be decided by penalties.

Susan Brown came through, making two big saves for ASU in the shootout. Miranda Wiley, Kara Nitti, Megan Stoltzfus and Lyndsey Patterson all also found the net for the Lady Red Wolves.

Derek Pittman's team has another tough test on Thursday night in the Sun Belt Semifinals. The Lady Red Wolves face three time defending conference champion Denver. Kickoff is set for 6pm on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.
