ASU Soccer falls in semifinal round

BOCA RATON, Fla. (11/5/09) - The Arkansas State soccer team was eliminated from the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in the semifinal round dropping a 3-1 decision to Denver Thursday. The loss ends a record setting year for the Red Wolves who completed action with an 8-10-3 overall record.

Denver will play eighth-seeded UALR Friday for the Sun Belt Tournament Championship in Boca Raton at 1 p.m.

"We are very disappointed that our season has come to an end but I am very proud of our kids and so excited for the future of this program," said ASU head coach Derek Pittman. "Our kids showed a lot of heart, a lot of growth throughout the year and it is exciting of what this program can become with all the players that we have. I want to take this opportunity to say thanks to our seniors for helping build this team into a successful program and I am thankful for all the effort and energy that they put in these last four years."

Senior's Amy Koss, Mary Geels (captain) and Erin McKenna (captain) played in their final match for the Red Wolves.

Denver jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half on goals from Bria Beardsley, Lizzy Carlson and Kaitlin Bast.

Sophomore Lyndsey Patterson scored ASU's only goal in the contest just after the halfway mark (45:32) on a feed from freshman Lucy Brient. Patterson took an initial shot which hit the right post and rebounded back to her before she finished to the upper left corner.

Denver outshot the Red Wolves 9-6 in the contest taking five shots on goal to ASU's two.

Sophomore Michele Clark led ASU with two shots while Bast led all players with four shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Susan Brown ended regular-season play with a record 108 saves, recording two in the semifinal matchup.
