Ex-sheriff in Newton Co. gets 8 months for fraud

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say the former sheriff of Newton County has been sentenced to eight months in prison for Social Security disability fraud.

Prosecutors say 60-year-old Jerry Lynn Jones of Marble Falls was also fined $3,000 and ordered to repay the Social Security Administration more than $108,000.

Jones pleaded guilty in June to one count of theft of government funds.

Prosecutors say the former sheriff hid his self-employment and earnings from the Social Security Administration while receiving disability benefits. He was accused of not reporting the earnings from 1997 through 2007.
