Sun Belt Women’s Basketball weekly news and notes

NEW ORLEANS - The 2009-10 Women's Basketball season begins this week as every Sun Belt institution will tip-off its season.

Preseason West Division favorites UALR will travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the first round of the preseason WNIT.  UALR is coming off three-straight 20-win seasons and back-to-back Sun Belt Conference West Division titles and WNIT appearances.  The Trojans set school records of 26 overall wins and 16 conference victories last season and return four of five starters to this season's squad. Rewriting history seems easy under the direction of head coach Joe Foley who enters his seventh season at the helm of the once-little know Trojan team.  Last season, the Trojans averaged 61.5 points per game while setting school records 2,028 total points, 809 field goals made, 1,846 field goal attempts, and 500 assists. Returning four out of five starters including leading scorer Chastity Reed, who averaged 18.1 points per game, makes for an easier transition for the 2009-10 season.

Middle Tennessee women's basketball earned 143 votes for the No. 24 position in the preseason Associated Press poll.  The Lady Raiders were also listed at No. 26 with 121 points in the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Blue Raiders topped the Others Receiving Votes category after finishing last season ranked No. 29 in the final poll.  "It is definitely exciting to be ranked in the preseason top 25," Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Insell said. "It says a lot about our program and our players. Now comes the time that we have to go out and take care of business."  Both WKU and UALR were also listed in the Other Receiving Votes category in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll as the Sun Belt Conference combined to have three teams listed.

A total of 11 Sun Belt Conference women's basketball contests will air on the Sun Belt Network this season - an all-time high for the league.  The 11 game package includes a game of the week for each week of the season beginning in December and the Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinal rounds.
