MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. (AP) - A man convicted of 20 animal cruelty counts who fled Arkansas before his sentencing has been returned to the state. The Baxter County Sheriff's Office says 45-year-old William Henry Hanson was booked in the county jail Friday night.

Hanson and his wife, Tammy Hanson, eluded authorities for more than three years after they were convicted in January 2006 of animal cruelty. Tammy Hanson was sentenced earlier this month to one year in jail and ordered to pay more than $15,000 in fines, court costs and restitution.

Police say hundreds of dogs, some rescued from Hurricane Katrina, were found on the couple's property. Deputies said the animals had sores, were living in cramped cages and were groveling for food.
