JONESBORO, Ark. (11/18/09) – Arkansas State senior libero Heather Bowman was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, while sophomore middle blocker Cayla Fielder earned first team All-Sun Belt Conference honors, the league announced Wednesday at the SBC Tournament banquet in Bowling Green, Ky.
Bowman was named SBC Defensive Player of the Week five times this season, the most recent honor coming earlier this week after leading the Red Wolves to their first victory over Denver since 2006 and to SBC West Division Co-championship. She currently leads the team with
676 digs and leads the conference with an average of 5.68 digs per set. Her average ranks sixth in the nation.
The Fort Smith native’s 676 digs rank second-best for a single season in ASU history. The senior libero is also one of three Red Wolves leading the team with 32 service aces.
Fielder finished the regular season with a team-high .338 hitting percentage, 358 kills and 122 total blocks, including a team-high 33 unassisted. She pounded out a career-high 22 kills in ASU’s five-set win over Denver and has posted double-digits kills in 21 matches this season.
The local Jonesboro product ranks among the top-ten in the conference in three overall categories and four categories against SBC opponents.
Overall, Fielder measures up fifth with a .338 hitting percentage, third with a 1.09 blocks per set average and fifth with an average of
4.12 points per set. Against SBC opponents, she ranks fifth with a
.348 hitting percentage, fourth with a 0.33 aces per set average, ninth with 0.91 blocks per set and fifth in points per set, averaging 4.17.
The Red Wolves are seeded fifth going into the SBC Tournament and are set to take on fourth-seeded New Orleans Thursday, Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. at Diddle Arena in Bowling Green.

NEW ORLEANS – On the day after the FIU Golden Panthers completed their perfect season in Sun Belt play going 17-0 and Arkansas State and New Orleans were named the league’s West Division co-Champions, the Sun Belt Conference release its seeds and schedule for the upcoming 2009 Volleyball Championship.
The championship will be held November 19 through 21 on the campus of WKU in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
