Darling's Fine Things owner Jamie Darling is in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the holiday shopping season.  Darling's Fine Things is one of 27 Newport area businesses participating in a "Shop Til You Drop" holiday promotion.  The type of businesses range, but there is a common goal.

"I hope that people will be reminded not just at holiday time but all year, the importance of spending their money locally," said Darling.

Darling calls small businesses the backbone of the local economy.  To keep that economy thriving--those businesses have to thrive too.  She says Newport area residents can help make that happen.

"I think that as long as we can remind people to invest your dollars here so that we as business owners can reinvest in the community, that's a very important thing," said Darling.

"They support us financially, they support us with their manpower, their volunteer hours," said Julie Allen, Newport Area Chamber of Commerce.

Allen says she has seen this holiday promotion grow in popularity over the years.

"That could mean  people are finding more of what they need in town, but we like to think that people are also more aware of the importance of shopping locally," said Allen.

With much of every dollar spent in a locally owned store staying in that community, both Allen and Jamie Darling say it's all the more reason to make sure local businesses thrive.

"Small communities should and we do take care of our own," said Allen.

A trend Darling says she wants to continue before, during and after the holidays.

"That's what you do when you support a locally owned business, you support the community and its causes," said Darling.

The 27 participating businesses include Attention Medical Supply, Cellular Mobility, Churchman Building Center, Daisies N Such, Darling's Fine Things, Farmers Oil Company, Gates Eyecare Center, George Kell Motors, George's Liquor Store, Gilliaum Feed & Seed, Greenway Equipment, Harris Ford, Jones Home Furnishings, Lakeside Chevrolet, Newport Electronics/Radio Shack, Newport Eyecare Clinic, Norman & Baker Pharmacy, Price Chopper, Purdy's Flower's & Gifts, Reba's Uniforms, Rent One, Sears Hometown Store, The Smokehouse Store, Stage Store, Subway, U.S. Pizza Co., and Walgreens.

Participating stores will also be registering shoppers for free gifts and gift certificates.
