Animal Shootings Investigated In SE Missouri

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Authorities are investigating reports of farm animal shootings in a rural area north of Cape Girardeau in southeast Missouri.

The Southeast Missourian newspaper reports that the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department has had reports from two landowners in recent weeks who have found injured or dead farm animals.

One case appears to be unfounded. A landowner found two donkeys dead weeks apart, but a veterinarian found no evidence they had been shot.

But in the other case, authorities say a wounded horse and donkey may have been shot by a small-caliber gun.

A shooting range is near the site where the wounded animals graze, and authorities are investigating to see if a stray bullet or bullets could be to blame.
