LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Arkansas Education Association, the state's largest teachers union, has endorsed Governor Huckabee's plan to improve the state's public schools.
The Republican governor said this morning that legislators should abandon partisanship in working to improve the public schools. The governor noted that he and the teachers union have not seen eye to eye on many issues.
But Huckabee says his plan to consolidate some school districts would help children. The state Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Arkansas last week endorsed the compromise proposal that would give school districts an opportunity to meet expected new state standards to avoid consolidation.
Huckabee says he hopes a bill containing the changes will be filed by Thursday. The teachers union endorsed Huckabee's plan at an event this morning at the Capitol.
