Ex-Sen. Jodie Mahony, education advocate, dies

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Jodie Mahony, who championed education issues during more than three decades in the Arkansas Legislature died Saturday. He was 70. Mahony, a Democrat from El Dorado, served from 1971 until 2006.

He earned a reputation as a ferocious advocate for Arkansas' public schools. Young's Funeral Directors in El Dorado confirmed Mahony's death. Services were expected to be announced later in the day Sunday. Former state Sen. Jim Argue of Little Rock served with Mahony in the Senate for 18 years.

Argue said Sunday that Mahony had many accomplishments to reflect upon. He noted a Mahony bill, which required advanced placement courses in all Arkansas public high schools, created a model for the rest of the nation.
