Arkansas' Nuclear 1 marks 35 years

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Nuclear One began operating 35 years ago, a start that changed the way Arkansas gets its electricity.

The anniversary was marked with a reception at the plant for state and local officials with representatives of plant owner Entergy Corp.

The two operating units at the plant near Russellville generate about a quarter of the state's electricity. The plant has an annual payroll of $93 million and is responsible for about $8 million in local tax revenue.

The $140 million plant was announced by then-Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller in 1967.
