Lawsuit could close Arkansas jail

TEXARKANA, AR (AP) - A review committee has asked Arkansas' attorney general to immediately file a lawsuit that would close the Little River County jail in Ashdown.  The 9th West Criminal Detention Facilities Review Committee says the jail doesn't meet the state's standards and should be closed.

Neither County Judge Clayton Castleman nor Sheriff Danny Russell have learned when the lawsuit will be filed or know when the jail will be shut down. Castleman says he'll close the jail after the paperwork is received.

He says county officials are trying to locate bed spaces for prisoners still in the jail. The county averages about 45 prisoners per day.

County voters in October rejected a 3/8-cent sales tax proposal to fund construction of a new jail. The estimated cost of a new jail was $6.7 million.
