COPY-Man gets life in prison in hospital guard's death

Associated Press - December 15, 2009 7:24 AM ET

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A Springfield man has been sentenced to life in prison for the kicking death of a hospital security guard.

Jeffrey Bolden was sentenced Monday in Boone County Circuit Court for the August 2008 death of 62-year-old Monte Ruby. He was also sentenced to a concurrent term of 7 years for second-degree assault of medical personnel.

Prosecutors say Bolden kicked Ruby in the head while Bolden was being restrained at Cox North hospital in Springfield. Ruby was taken to the hospital after being bitten by a police dog during a chase.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the defense argued that Ruby died of a stroke. Bolden repeated that claim Monday before being sentenced. His attorney says he will appeal.
