PEMISCOT COUNTY, MO (KAIT) – Four people were killed and three other were seriously injured when a car crossed a median and struck another car head-on on Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County.
The accident happened around 5:30 Sunday morning.
According to Missouri State Police, Leon Cash was driving his Cadillac Escalade when he crossed the median and struck Howard Gilliland's S-U-V head-on.
Cash, Howard, Vontina Gilliland, and Felecia Reeve-Gilliland were all killed in the accident.
Two others in Gilliland's S-U-V were also injured in the accident and flown to Lebonheur's Children Hospital in Memphis. A passenger in Cash's car was flown to the Med in Memphis in serious condition.
State Police say 2 of the people killed were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
Despite the rash of fatal accidents over the weekend, the Missouri Department of Transportation says fatal accidents in 2009 are down 10% from years past.
Mo-Dot credits the decline to better roads, and a tougher crackdown on seat-belt laws by police.
