Post Office eyes return to downtown J'boro, Ark.

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - The U.S. Postal Service, which hasn't sold postage for unstamped letters and packages in downtown Jonesboro since June, says those services could return soon. Postal Service spokeswoman Leisa Tolliver-Gay said Friday that the agency is in the final stages of negotiating the sale of the downtown facility to neighbor City Water and Light.

She said that, once the sale is complete, the current location will be leased back from City Water and Light, and the Postal Service would resume providing retail postal services. CWL General Manager Ron Bowen said a closing on the deal could come by the end of the month.

The downtown post office closed abruptly at the end of June, posting signs saying it was closed temporarily due to an air-conditioning problem. Doors remained open for box customers, and already stamped mail was still collected from outside drop boxes, but retail service never returned.
