MARBLE HILL, Mo. (AP) - At 15, Brittany Holmes has already known seven other teenagers who have died in accidents along the twisting roads near her hometown of Marble Hill, Mo. She has decided to do something about it.
The Southeast Missourian reports that Holmes has begun a campaign to get improvements to highways 34 and 51 and other roads near her small community. She recently distributed a letter to politicians and media outlets to raise awareness about the situation.
She is advocating for improvements such as guard rails, reflective paint and shoulders.
She received a response from Rep. Jo Ann Emerson. The Cape Girardeau Republican says she has secured a $500,000 earmark for safety improvements along Highway 34, and is seeking improvements on Highway 51.
