Jonesboro, AR (KAIT) – When the weather turns cold outside, many kids wind up spending a lot of time inside where it's warm. However, too much time indoors could be bad for their health.
Jim Stearns Director of Saint Bernard's Fitness Center said the cold should not keep kids from getting their much needed exercise. One of the biggest problems for kids at home is technology.
Stearns said, "If I sit in front of the computer or the TV and I take away some of my time of opportunities to be active then that really limits you."
There are many fun and easy things kids can do at home that don't require any equipment.
Stearns said, "You want them to do a little bit of cardio exercise. Where they're either running in place or stepping in place or doing some jumps or dances in place where they get their heart-rate up."
When it comes to exercising for your kids you might think they have to do it for a long period of time, but that's not the case.
Stearns said, "If they're moving for 20 minutes it counts. You know we always say it's not important what exercise you do, it's important to be doing something."
According to Stearns if parents set an example and are active that will go a long way in helping their kids.
Stearns said, "I think that's probably one of the most important things that if they feel strongly about it, then it's more likely that their children will participate in that."
