BELL CITY, MO (KFVS) - Bell City is without a police force as of Tuesday evening. The lone member of the force, Blake Sindle says he was fired Tuesday afternoon.
According to Mayor Howard Pikey, Blake Sindle didn't fulfill his agreement to move into town. Pikey says Sindle lived an hour away. He tells me they hired Sindle in August of 2008.
"We gave him a year to move to Bell City," said Pikey. "Obviously here we are in January of 2010."
Pikey says they want to hire someone who will live in town and can respond more quickly to the needs of the community.
"Stoddard County Sheriff's deputies will be responding to our needs until then," said Pikey. "We're a town of about 450 people."
"I was kind of blind sided," said Sindle. "The mayor told me today at the end of my shift. I'm going to see what my options are."
There are reports that threats made to a family online had something to do with the Chief's firing. However, the mayor says there's nothing to those rumors. There was speculation that Sindle was fired because he failed to handle the situation.
"It didn't have anything to do with anything on the Topix site," said Pikey. "It was just because he failed to move to the city."
The story aired Monday was about an investigation involving Veronica and Shawn Yount. They say they found out someone was offering money to have them killed on Topix.
Meanwhile Pikey says they are anxious to replace Sindle. Anyone interested in the Police Chief position can apply at City Hall in Bell City.
