Post Office to return to downtown Jonesboro

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – The United States Postal Service has announced it will sell its property in downtown Jonesboro to City Water and Light.

The official announcement came Tuesday afternoon in a press release by the U.S. Postal Service out of Little Rock.

The building sits at 310 East Street in downtown Jonesboro.

USPS will stay in downtown, by leasing retail space in the building from CWL. The USPS says someone from the Postal Service will be at the location during business hours.

"We are delighted to announce that we will return retail services back in downtown Jonesboro after alterations and upgrades have been made to this facility over the next few months," said Postmaster Rob Driskell.

The Postal Service suspended retail services there in June 2009 after air conditioning equipment failed.

In the release the USPS said it used the Jonesboro operations as an example to improve efficiencies nationwide to meet the economic hardship felt by the USPS in the past year.

USPS says their goal is to cut $5.9 billion in cost nationwide.
