JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The freezing rain and sleet changed to snow by mid morning Friday in Region 8.

Five inches of snow was reported on the ground in Batesville with lesser amounts all across northern and northeastern Arkansas and southeast Missouri.

A large mass of moisture is headed for the region which could mean well over a foot of snow in some locations.  Jonesboro and Paragould are on track to see between 7 and 12 inches of snow before it tapers off sometime Saturday morning.

The thin layer of ice at the beginning of the Winter Blast closed more than half of the schools in Region 8.  A number of businesses and events were also canceled.  Roads were ice and snow covered by 3:00am in some locations.  Roads are passable, but hazardous according to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department's website.

Sporadic power outages were reported across the area including Bono, Brookland, Caraway, Alicia, Blytheville, Walnut Ridge, and rural portions of Jackson and Poinsett County.
