Suicide bomber kills 13 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) - An Iraqi police official says a suicide bomber walking among Shiite pilgrims in northern Baghdad has detonated an explosives belt, killing at least 16 people.

The official says the bomber struck Monday as the pilgrims were walking through the Shiite neighborhood of Shaab. He says that about 38 people have been wounded.

A hospital official also confirmed the casualties. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Insurgents have routinely targeted pilgrims in Iraq.

This week, hundreds of thousands of Shiites are making the pilgrimage to Karbala to mark the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death of a revered Shiite figure.
