Escape of 3 Ark. juveniles leaves guard dead

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) - Jefferson County authorities say a guard has died after three inmates at a juvenile lockup in Pine Bluff beat him as they fled the detention center.

Officials say the trio escaped late Saturday night and the guard, Leonard Wall, died about 4 p.m. Sunday. 2 of the escapees were recaptured Sunday evening at Fort Smith.

Little Rock television station KTHV said the three apparently stole a car after their escape and drove in it to Clarksville, where the car was found abandoned. Escapees Nicholas Dismuke and Christopher Beverage, both 16, were captured at Fort Smith around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Police are still looking for Brandon Henderson, 18.

Deputies say the escape occurred as guards were checking to make sure the detention center's inmates were in bed. Another guard was treated at a hospital and released.
