ASU Tennis Beats Sam Houston State Friday to Open 2010 Season

El Paso, TX (KAIT) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team
opened the 2010 season with a 4-3 win over Sam Houston State Friday
afternoon in El Paso, Texas.

"I think it was a good first match," said ASU head coach Marcia
Williams.  "We did some things really well, and in a lot of ways we
looked better than last semester.  That was really encouraging."

The Red Wolves won the doubles point with Elne' Barnard and Rone' van
Wyk topping Giorgia Pozzan and Sheridan Currie 8-4 at the No. 1 spot.
Jenny Herring and Menna Kamal picked up a win by forfeit at No. 3,
while Maria Alemán and Andreea Georgescu fell to Cally Woerner and
Nadia Dubyanskaya 8-4 at No. 2.

In singles action, ASU went 3-3 on the day.  Barnard defeated Currie
6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot, Alemán topped Woerner 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5
and Georgescu won at No. 6 by forfeit.  Herring dropped a match at No.
1 to Pozzan 6-4, 6-3.  van Wyk fell to Tatyana Postinkova 6-3, 7-5 at
No. 3, and Kamal lost a hard-fought match at No. 4 to Dubyanskaya 6-4,
2-6, 7-5.

The Red Wolves hit the courts again Saturday morning when they take on
Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 9:00 a.m. in El Paso.
