ASU Men’s Golf tied for 12th place

MOBILE, Ala. (2/21/10) - Competing in its first fall tournament, the Arkansas State men's golf team shot a first-round 305 Sunday at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate to finish the tournament's opening day tied for 12th place among 18 teams.

The Red Wolves were led by Lloyd du Preez with an even-par 72, which places him tied for ninth with two rounds remaining. Joining du Preez among the top-25 individual leaders was Warren Hood, who is currently tied for 16th place after posting a 73.

ASU, which is tied with South Florida, trails Toledo by just one stroke. The Red Wolves finished the first day ahead of Southern Miss, Kentucky, Akron, Belmont and Jacksonville.

The Red Wolves are within a single-digit stroke margin of seventh-place Iowa State, which shot a 296. Vanderbilt leads the field with a 290, while Mississippi and Memphis are tied for second place after both shot a 291.

Following du Preez and Hood for ASU are Kell Shenep tied for 68th place with a 78, Chris Pledger tied for 91st place with an 82 and Tyler Thompson tied for 98th place with an 86.

The three-day tournament will continue Monday with the second round.
