Weiner agrees to annexation with Harrisburg schools

Weiner, AR (KAIT) - The Weiner School Board voted 4-0 Friday afternoon to annex their school with Harrisburg.

In the agreement, the Weiner superintendent and treasurer will lose their jobs.  Those duties will be the responsibility of the Harrisburg School District.  Other staff and students will remain on the Weiner campus for at least one year.

A small crowd was at the meeting and cheered when the decision was made.  Some supporters there said this was the only decision they had left.  On Thursday, the Harrisburg school board voted 5-0 to an annexation proposal with Weiner.  The deal gives Weiner one of Harrisburg's five board positions.  Weiner had until Noon Monday to make a decision before the state stepped in and decided for them.  The larger school district will begin on July 1, 2010.

Brandi Hodges was at today's meeting and will have reaction on Region 8 News at 10.
