ASU Men’s Golf Finishes USF Invitational 1st Round in 5th Place

Dade City, FL (ASU) – The Arkansas State men's golf team shot an opening-round 289 to finish Friday's competition at the University of South Florida Invitational in fifth place among 23 teams.

The Red Wolves are just three strokes behind tournament leader North Florida and trail second-place Middle Tennessee, Florida Southern and Campbell by just one stroke. Among the teams ASU currently leads are Sun Belt Conference opponents South Alabama, Troy and Florida Atlantic.

ASU was led by freshman Wessel Zwiegers who shot a career-best 68 to finish the first round tied for first place.  ASU's Kell Shenep and Lloyd du Preez both posted a 73 to end the day tied for 33rd place, while Chris Pledger is tied for 61st place with a 75 and Sawyer Radler tied for 74th place with a 76.

The Red Wolves opening round topped teams such as South Florida, Xavier, Cincinnati, Rhode Island, Louisville, Villanova, Nebraska, Marquette and Marshall.

ASU continues the three-day tournament Saturday with the second round at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
