Dade City, FL (ASU) – Lloyd du Preez tied for 11th place to lead the Arkansas State men's golf team at the University of South Florida Invitational, where the Red Wolves finished tied for ninth place among 23 teams in the final standings with a three-round 875.
ASU recorded its second straight top-10 finish and fourth of the season. The Red Wolves' 875 was their second lowest three-round score of the season, behind only their 854 posted at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate played Sept. 14-15.
The Red Wolves opened competition Friday with a 289, their lowest single-round score since they played at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in September, to finish the day tied for fifth place. ASU added just one stroke to that total in the second round, but dropped two places in the standings to tied for seventh. The final round of play saw ASU shoot a 296, which moved it 11 strokes over par for all three rounds combined and into a tie with Troy.
du Preez shot a two-under par 214 to collect his fifth top-15 finish of the season. du Preez posted two rounds under par, shooting a 70 and 71 for the second and third rounds, respectively. He was joined in the top 25 by freshman Wessel Zwiegers, who tied for 23rd place to record his best finish of the season. Zwiegers shot a combined 217, which included a first-round 68 that was his lowest score of the season and the best by an ASU player at the tournament.
Following du Preez and Zwiegers, Kell Shenep shot a 222 to finish tied for 41st place. Also competing for the Red Wolves, Chris Pledger finished tied for 61st place with a 225 and Sawyer Radler tied for 85th place with a 229. Radler was competing in his first tournament of the season.
Florida Southern won the championship with a 12-under 852, while Middle Tennessee placed second with an 857 and North Florida third with an 860. The Red Wolves finished within a single-digit stroke margin of Nebraska, Campbell and Eastern Michigan, while it defeated teams such as Louisville, South Florida, Villanova, Florida Atlantic, DePaul, Marquette, Rhode Island, Cincinnati and Marshall.
The Red Wolves next compete at the Jackrabbit Invitational, scheduled for March 15-16 in Las Vegas.
