Pine Bluff mayor fires police chief

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) - Pine Bluff Mayor Carl Redus Jr. has fired Police Chief John Howell - but is offering no reasons why.

Howell says he was fired Monday during a regular weekly meeting with the mayor when the two argued about crime in the city.

Redus says he's been advised by legal counsel not to discuss the reasons.

Redus said the city's deputy police chiefs will report to him while he determines how to select a new police chief.

Howell had been Pine Bluff police chief since March 2006 following a 33-year-career with the Arkansas State Police and 18 months with the Arkansas Criminal Justice Institute.
