Former Sen. Jean Carnahan to receive Truman award

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - Former Sen. Jean Carnahan has been selected to receive the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award.

Library officials announced Tuesday that Carnahan will receive the award during a luncheon in Kansas City on May 6.

The widow of former Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan was chosen for her many years of public service and for working with her husband in his public service career.

When Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash three weeks before the November 2000 election, his wife accepted an appointment to serve in the Senate. She served two years.

The award is given every year since 1973 by the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation.
