LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Gov. Mike Beebe says a disagreement with the federal government over how to care for developmentally disabled people may be in a factor in a Justice Department filing that seeks to block the Conway Human Development Center from accepting young patients.
Beebe said Wednesday that the federal government wants to see large centers such as the one in Conway closed, with patients being cared for in home or community settings. The Justice Department on Tuesday asked a federal judge to block further admission of young people at the Conway center because the patients will likely remain institutionalized.
The filing also alleged that some patients were improperly restrained or inappropriately medicated.
Beebe says the state will investigate and fire a worker if a patient is abused or isn't medicated properly.
