Hot Springs, AR (KAIT) - State Finals Friday was a sour taste in the mouths of the Bay Yellowjackets and the Cave City Cavewomen. Both picked up State Runner-up honors at Hot Springs.
Class 1A Boys State Finals: Wonderview 36, Bay 33
John Zimmerman's 16 points, 14 in the second half, lifted the Wonderview Dare Devils to a 36-33 victory over Bay in the Boys Class 1A Championship game. The championship claimed by Wonderview in a game Friday at Hot Springs is the first for the Dare Devils (36-4), who were in the title game for the first time since 2001. Bay (36-7) won its only state title in 1965 and was in its third title game. The Yellowjackets held a 33-27 lead with 4:28 left but would not score again, going 0-5 from the free throw line.
"We won a lot of little battles in the game but we lost the free-throw battle," said Bay coach Brad Brannen. "That is what hurt us the most." For the game, Bay shot 8 of 18 from the line. Wonderview hit three of its final four free throws and a 3-pointer by Brandon Burgener with 42 seconds left gave the Dare Devils a 34-33 lead. Burgener finished with eight points. Gunner Freeman and Troy Brown had seven points each for Bay.
"We did some things in the second half where we were able to open it up for John," Wonderview coach Jerod Squires said.
