ASU Baseball beats Louisiana-Lafayette 13-9 Sunday

Lafayette, LA (ASU) - The Arkansas State Red Wolves (10-5, 2-1) took advantage of some timely hitting, nine strikeouts from sophomore starter Jacob Lee and seven Louisiana-Lafayette (9-6, 1-2) errors to defeat the Ragin' Cajuns 13-9 Sunday afternoon in game three of a Sun Belt Conference baseball series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

The ASU win, coupled with a 6-2 Red Wolves victory Saturday night, gives the Red Wolves the series victory over the Cajuns for the third consecutive year.  Louisiana-Lafayette opened the three-game slate with a 13-5 win Friday night.

Arkansas State took advantage of some early success at the plate and a pair of ULL errors to send home a run in each of the first two innings.  Three hits for the Red Wolves in the first, including an RBI single from designated hitter Danny Riemenschneider, led to a 1-0 ASU advantage after the opening frame.  Catcher Tyler Smith reached and advanced to third on two Cajun errors in the second before coming home on a single from shortstop Jordan Kimball for the 2-0 A-State lead.

Louisiana-Lafayette tied the game in the second when left fielder Alex Fuselier drove in a run with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch, but the Red Wolves answered with four runs in the third to go up 6-2.

Left fielder Cody Pace doubled to drive in the first third-inning run, a two-run double from Kimball gave ASU a 5-2 advantage and Kimball scored when second baseman Giovanni Garcia reached on the third ULL error in as many innings.

Keefer walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to cut the Arkansas State lead to 6-3, and the Cajuns pulled to within a run with two runs in the fifth.  Designated hitter Brian Bowman tripled in ULL's first run in the fifth, before scoring on a passed ball to make it 6-5, ASU heading into the sixth.

Arkansas State took advantage of an RBI single from center fielder Michael Faulkner and a pair of Cajun errors on the play to extend its lead to 9-5 in the seventh.  With two runners aboard, Faulkner's opposite-field single drove in third baseman Jordan Castaldo from second and two errors later, Kimball scored from first and Faulkner rounded the bases to give the Red Wolves the four-run cushion.

The Red Wolves tacked on two more in the eighth to stretch their lead to 11-5.  First baseman Murray Watts advanced to third and scored on a Cajun error when Castaldo bunted and reached on the play, and designated hitter Ryan Emery singled and eventually scored on a ground-out from catcher Kyle DeGrace.  RBI singles in the ninth from right fielder Todd Baumgartner and Watts scored ASU's final two runs.

A grand slam from Fuselier in the ninth set the final at 13-9.

Lee picked up the win for ASU to improve to 2-1 on the season.  Lee gave up five runs on seven hits while walking five and registering the five strikeouts.  T.J. Gieth took the loss for ULL, giving up six runs on six hits in two and two-thirds innings on the mound.  Gieth struck out one and walked one.

Kimball was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead ASU at the plate, while Fuselier was 2-for-3 with five runs driven in to pace the Cajuns.

The Red Wolves will be back in action March 16 when they travel to Springfield, Mo. for a two-game series with the Bears of Missouri State.  Tuesday's game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., while Wednesday's contest is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
