PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) - Members of the Pine Bluff City Council say they're getting numerous phone calls in support of fired Police Chief John Howell and are considering an effort to reinstate him.
Howell was fired March 8 by Mayor Carl Redus. Redus has declined to say why he fired Howell. Howell has said he was fired during a meeting in which they discussed the city's crime rate.
The City Council meets Monday afternoon and Alderman Bill Brumett said he plans to ask that Howell be reinstated. Two-thirds of the council - 6 of the eight members - would have to vote to overturn the firing and reinstate Howell.
An attorney for Howell has sent a letter to the city asking that he be reinstated and saying a wrongful termination lawsuit is being considered.
