ASU Women's Golf in sixth place at Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate

VICTORIA, Texas (KAIT) - Competing in its first spring tournament of the season, the Arkansas State women's golf team finished the opening two rounds of action at the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate in sixth place among 16 teams after shooting a combined 630 Sunday at the Victoria Country Club.

ASU shot a 315 for both rounds and completed the day just five strokes behind fifth-place Akron and within 10 strokes of fourth-place Sam Houston State. The Red Wolves were just six strokes out of first place at the end of the first round, but tournament-leader Oklahoma cut nine strokes off its first-round score to finish with a combined 611 to ASU's 630.

"We were obviously a little rough around the edges, but I can't say that I am dissatisfied at all because this was a respectable start to our first spring tournament," said ASU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "This is a start as we build toward the conference tournament this spring."

ASU has three players currently among the top-20 individual leaders, led by freshman Anna Carling in a tie for ninth place. Carling posted the lowest first-round score on the team with a 76 and came back to shoot a 78 for the second 18 holes to give her a combined 154.

"Anna is already a great player, but is going to be an exceptional player," said Brown-Lemm. "She played very well at times today considering she had four double bogeys on par-5 holes and still finished where she did. I look for big things from her this spring."

Jennifer Welch and Cassie Huffer are both tied for 17th place with a combined 157. Huffer posted a second-round 76 to match Carling with lowest single-round score of the day for the Red Wolves. Welch finished with an opening-round 78 and shot a 79 for the second 18 holes.

Host-school Texas State is in second place with 613, while Lamar rounds out the top-three team leaders with a 616.

ASU will wrap up competition at the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate on Monday with the third and final round.
