Fugitive Joplin murder suspect detained in Texas

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - A fugitive Joplin murder suspect has been detained in Texas.

Twenty-year-old Byron D. Lang is charged with second-degree murder in the September 2008 death of 2-year-old Kyler DeShawn Jones. Police say the child's mother left her son with Lang and his girlfriend for a few days before his death.

An autospy showed the boy suffered numerous injuries including a skull fracture.

Lang was free on a $100,000 bond when he disappeared.

The Joplin Globe reported that he was caught Thursday near the west Texas town of Big Spring. He had relatives in Texas and had lived there himself in the past.

Chief Deputy James White with the Howard County Sheriff's Department said Lang made an initial court appearance Friday in Big Spring. He remains in custody there without bond.
