SEARCY – Freshman Lucas Waddell pitched a complete game shutout and sophomore Chase Presley had four hits as Harding swept Williams Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Jerry Moore Field. The sweep gave the Bisons 10 consecutive wins over the Eagles.
Waddell, a native of Ladner, British Columbia, struck out seven without allowing a walk in earning his first shutout in his first collegiate start. He yielded only four hits, all singles to improve to 2-0 on the season. Waddell needed only 81 pitches for the complete game, and 60 of those were strikes.
Junior Trent Kinnear drove in both runs for Harding, which had six hits in the opener.
Josh Brown (2-2) pitched well but suffered the loss for Williams Baptist. He allowed two runs (one earned) in six innings and struck out three.
Presley, who hails from Jackson, Tenn., went 3-for-3 in game two with a triple and his second home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the seventh. Paul Anzalone had two hits for Harding, and John Wagnon drove in two with his first double of the season.
Alex Smith (3-1) earned his team-best third win on the mound. He pitched four innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs. Junior Donny Stephens pitched three innings in relief for his first save.
Jordan Fowler (0-2) walked six and allowed five hits and six earned runs in three innings to take the loss.
Justin Hawkins was 2-for-3 for the Eagles in game two and hit his first home run of the season.
Harding is back in action Saturday and Sunday for a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark.
