ASU Tennis Wins At South Alabama On Sunday

Mobile, AL (ASU) - The Arkansas State women's tennis team (5-7) defeated the South Alabama Jaguars (1-9) by a score of 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Mobile, Ala.

"Even though we were given a couple of points, I am proud of our team for a few reasons," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams.  "First, our doubles played well and came through to win both doubles matches.  Second, Menna (Kamal) played one of her best matches of the season, and Rone' (van Wyk) played well again even though she's not 100 percent.  And last, we have never beaten South Alabama before today."

The Red Wolves won the doubles point at all three positions, with USA forced to forfeit at No. 3.  Elne' Barnard and Rone' van Wyk topped Katie Welch and Chane Hines 8-7 (8-6) at No. 1, while Jenny Herring teamed up with Menna Kamal and took an 8-4 win over Marie Boura and Jess Courtnell at No. 2.

ASU came away with four singles wins on the day.  van Wyk won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 over Hines, and Kamal posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Courtnell at No. 4.  Ioana Teu and Maria Aleman took wins at No. 5 and 6 by forfeit.

Arkansas State will return to the courts in Cape Girardeau, Mo. when it faces Southeast Missouri State April 8 at 1:30 p.m.
