Murfeesboro, TN (AmericanRugbyNews.com) - Matt Huckaby and the ASU Rugby team travelled to Middle Tennessee needing a win over South Carolina at the USA Rugby South Collegiate Championship to punch their ticket to the national playoffs.
ASU dominated #21 South Carolina 64-10, while the Volunteers edged #14 Florida 13-10.
In less than ideal playing conditions, the Red Wolves led the Gamecocks 40-3 at halftime.
Arkansas State used the strong wind in the first half to pin USC in their own end and played some unselfish rugby to set up the big win.
The Red Wolves used a glut of territory and possession to turn their backs loose, especially out wide where South Carolina proved to be a little vulnerable.
"Our backs did really well," said ASU head coach Matt Huckaby. "Our guys were patient, they set the rucks and sent the ball wide. South Carolina had a good game plan, it was just hard to execute it in the wind."
The Red Wolves will play #15 Tennessee Sunday to determine the two seeds from the South for the Round of 16.
