SEARCY – Delta State scored four runs on only one hit in the sixth inning and defeated Harding 6-1 on Sunday in the finale of the three-game Gulf South Conference series at Jerry Moore Field. The Statesmen won the series two-games-to-one.
Harding (15-17, 3-5 GSC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Anthony Guglielmi singled and came around to score on Will McDonald's infield ground out.
The Bisons held the lead until the sixth when the Statesmen tied the game as Billy Ray Todd was hit by a pitch with one out and the bases loaded. A ground ball from Michael Niemann could have ended the inning on a double play but a wild throw allowed three more runs to score.
Harding sophomore Hayden Shirley (0-4) took the loss, but pitched well for the Bisons. He allowed only four hits and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings and struck out a career-high eight batters.
Delta State (20-10-1, 5-3) added two more runs in the eighth off Harding reliever Tyler Billen.
The Statesmen had nine hits, including two each from Cade Hoggard and Michael Vinson, who had two doubles.
Delta State's Trey Griffin (3-2) pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out 10.
Harding is back in action Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Central Baptist at Jerry Moore Field.
