Christians pray for MO lawmakers facing budget gaps

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Christians are gathering at the Missouri Capitol to pray that legislators will have wisdom in developing a state budget.

The keynote speaker for Monday's event is Anne Graham Lotz, the daughter of evangelist Billy Graham. Participants are gathering in the Capitol Rotunda for a prayer service, and walking through the halls of the Capitol praying outside legislators' offices.

Organizers says legislative leaders asked for prayer as they address what Gov. Jay Nixon has described as a $500 million shortfall in the budget he proposed for next year.

Monday's event is intended to kick off 40 days of prayer and fasting, leading up to the May 7 deadline for the Legislature to pass the state budget.
