Red Wolves finish UALR Women’s Golf Classic in seventh place

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KAIT) – The Arkansas State women's golf team finished the UALR Women's Golf Classic with a solid outing Tuesday at Diamante Country Club, posting a final-round 300 that matched the second best score of the day and gave the Red Wolves a three-round total of 913 for a seventh-place finish among the 18-team field.

ASU moved up two places in the final standings with its strong performance, and its 300 tied its second lowest single-round score of the entire season. The Red Wolves claimed their eighth top-10 finish in nine tournaments played this season. ASU carded a 306 and 307 for the first and second rounds, respectively, that were played Monday. Its 913 total was its second lowest three-round score of the season behind only its 912 posted at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial played Sept. 21-22.

"The conditions today were perfect and we played very well," said ASU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "Really, the 306 and 307 were not bad rounds at all. There were lots of good teams playing in this field, and to finish with a 300 today was just fantastic. We had some rounds under our belt heading into this tournament and we were prepared to play, so I'm thrilled with this performance."

Arkansas State was led by junior Cassie Huffer, who shot a combined 223 to tie for ninth place and pick up her third top-10 finish of the season. After shooting a 76 for the first round and a second-round 74, Huffer recorded a 73 Tuesday that moved her up seven places in the standings.

Anna Carling continued her strong play, posting her sixth top-20 finish in eight tournaments played. The freshman standout scored a combined 225 to finish tied for 19th place. She also enjoyed her best round Tuesday, shooting a career-low 72 that was also the lowest score of the tournament by an ASU player.

Following Huffer and Carling, Adrian Sportsman finished tied for 35th place with a 232, Jennifer Welch tied for 48th with a 235 and Jennifer Loiacano placed 58th with a 239.

UALR claimed the tournament title with an 893, while Oral Roberts shot an 894 to finish second and Middle Tennessee an 895 to take third.

The Red Wolves return to action April 10-11 at the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate that will be played in Richmond, Ky. The tournament will be the final tune up for ASU before it competes in the Sun Belt Conference Championships, scheduled for April 20-22 in Florence, Ala.
