Maplewood officer crashes after heart attack

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A suburban St. Louis police officer remains hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a heart attack and crashing his patrol car after leaving the funeral of another officer - who died in an accident.

Maplewood Sgt. George Ross on Tuesday attended the funeral Mass for 27-year-old St. Louis officer David Haynes, who died last week in a crash while pursuing a burglary suspect.

Ross was driving on Interstate 55. KSDK-TV reports he suffered a heart attack and his car drove through a chain link fence before coming to rest against a parked car.

Maplewood Chief Steve Kruse says doctors are optimistic that Ross will recover.

Ross is 62 and a 33-year veteran of the Maplewood department.
