North Ark. man convicted of killing mother-in-law

EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - A Green Forest man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for beating and stabbing his mother-in-law to death.

A Carroll County jury convicted 40-year-old Marty Alvard last week of first-degree murder. He'll be eligible for parole after serving 28 years of his term.

Prosecutors say Alvard hit his mother-in-law, Janice Allen, in the back of the head with a baseball bat, then stabbed her to death. Alvard turned himself into police shortly after the April 2008 attack.

Alvard apologized for the crime during his sentencing. His attorney, Bill James, says his client gave no reason for the attack and that he "just snapped."
